India needs to be led by a man like Anna Hazare – whose heart is in the right place – than by a Ph.D in economics who allows corruption!

When I wrote my previous editorial, “Anna, my Prime Minister,” many people pounced on me accusing me of writing it a bit too soon and getting carried away. It is true that I had written that piece on the second day of Anna's fast. But to us, Anna was not a new phenomenon. Twelve years ago, the IIPM Think Tank had initiated visits to Anna’s villages and had undertaken a study. For us, he has been a great icon since then and before too. And therefore, when he decided to come to Delhi, I instantly knew we needed to be behind him. Dr Kiran Bedi, whom I personally respect very much, had already come to our institute during the Bharatiya Manavata Vikas Puraskar ceremony – where she had also received an award for her longstanding commitment to changing India – and had given a passionate speech to support the cause. Arvind Kejriwal, to whom not just me but the entire nation also should be thankful (for fighting selflessly for the RTI Act) was also there with Anna; and so was Swami Agnivesh – a swami with a very balanced outlook to social causes. That's a group that, for the first time in my life, I could feel proud of. And yes, these are the people I want our country to be led by. That is why even in this issue, instead of doing a story in our magazine, we decided to do a special supplement on this great movement initiated by this great man Anna Hazare – for the first time ever in our magazine’s four and a half year history.

So, if the question is whether I still stand by my initial proclamation, the answer is yes; I do stand by it – and more so after meeting the man himself in person. India is the country of people who barely live around the globally defined standard of poverty line of 2 dollars a day. And Anna is one their true representatives. India is a land where the common man has not been allowed to get great education. And Anna is one of them, and yet someone whose life education is worth many Ph.Ds. India lives in its villages and so does Anna. India still has a heart of gold and so does this man. When we suggested to him that we wished to institute the Anna Hazare rural leadership fellowship, he had such wonderful thoughts on the same and explained why we needed leaders in rural India more than w did in urban India if we really wanted to change the nation as a whole. The man, his selflessness, his down-to-earth ways, his simple yet honest and powerful thoughts... everything made me personally respect him far more than I had imagined.

Sitting next to him in the most unassuming and simple manner was Arvind Kejriwal – another inspiration and solid example of selflessness, the man who had given an entire nation hope through the RTI Act and made the government much more responsible in many ways. And every word he spoke added to the belief with which I went to them – the belief that we needed to bring them to mainstream politics. Although they both vehemently disagreed on coming to mainstream vote-politics, I was more than convinced that these are the leaders we needed; because if we can't respect our current leaders, then the current ones are of no good. Anna and his people, on the contrary, are those that every Indian can easily respect.

I just want to say that it is time that we don't breathe easy just with this one small win that Anna and his group of committed Indians have achieved. I was happy to know that even they don't plan to leave it here. Up on their agenda are judicial and electoral reforms – two subjects extremely close to our hearts at the IIPM Think Tank and Planman Media. Anna and his people plan to bring forth each of these issues and continue their struggle till things change. I wonder why they are ready to be called unelected people’s representatives, when they can win with votes and do much more than they can do now by staying out of politics. Politics is not the last resort of scoundrels. It’s the first resort of every committed soul. They need to show us the way. And I, for one would rather have a man like Anna Hazare as my Prime Minister – simply because his heart is in the right place – than having a Ph.D in economics as my Prime Minister who breeds corruption and keeps his eyes closed to all the filth around him.

this couldn't be another political hulla bulla?
there is a colossal difference between uplifting a small village and an entire subcontinent like India.
Corruption, it pervades all states, whoever be the political party governing it, and are you so certain that it does not pervade every nook and corner of our state's government offices?
I have never heard any voices raised, not even when a green activist was shot down before the HIgh court.
People are easily led and deceived since long. In that context, How can a person without any idea about the economic policies and context judge what is good or bad. If their fav leaders support, they support.
Why don't we start with our own local areas and then move up to centre? This way, corruption can easily be tackled.
How bizarre and hypocritical it would be if we, the people, the citizens allow corruption and other wrong practices in own local areas, our back doors(maybe not literally)and then shout on the top of the roofs because there is a problem at the centre????

its shame to know that when educated peoples, ministers and person wearing 3 suits rob from our nations become a hero and is supported by one or other political parties and mideas... and a poor person who steals a rupee or bread to fill his stomach for a day is put in jail and called a robber... a fact which must be eradicated...

Dear Mr. Arindham Chaudhary (editor The Sunday India).
Only today I came to know about this magazine. I am not a journalist and just want to say that corruption in India is an old concept, from the times of Rajas and Maharajas, and eliminating it is not a one man job. Like the railway station rule “first to come last to go”; like other social ailments this practice will go away, only if people of all socio-political levels possessed a strong intension for the same. Some of the officials ask for a bribe, and same way others bribe the officials for their work to get done, only the big scandals get just much publicity.

Mr. Chaudhuri,
After the recent events and the role Anna Hazare played, I am sure you would have changed your opinion regarding having him as your PM!what I could not digest is our leaders going back into the womb of history and retrieving fossilized methods for solving contemporary issues!
Our opposition leaders have not cultivated the culture of western democracy, namely, during the "election" they are "rivals for power'! Once a national Govt. is setup they should accept the new role of "partners for progress"!Intellectuals should not think that those who govern are "devls' and those who oopsse are "angels"!We have to be quite "disinterested in our approach.we ahve to keep this thought supreme that it is not a problem of X or Y but of the entire nation. Those who take liberty to attack the ruling class, shouls not spare the opposition when it is wrong!

86% Indians fear losing their jobs due to the Pandemic as per a recent online survey. The fear has completely stopped economic activities and spending. We must remove the fear and start the economy. For that we need to guarantee everyone that jobs or no job, they will be economically secure through a minimum unemployment allowance (double of which should be the minimum wages). It requires a simple four step process: 1. Create an online database of job seekers based on their Adhaar Card number. 2. Make it totally illegal to employ anyone for any kind of job without registering his/her Aadhaar Card number. 3. The moment Adhaar Card number is fed in the list of employed, it gets automatically removed from the job seekers register and they stop getting unemployment allowance. 4. Everyone getting unemployment allowance will have to necessarily do 4 hours of social and community service as directed by the registry. Employers will also know who is seeking jobs where and their qualificat...
D ear Arvind Kejriwal, As my relatives, acquaintances and students die avoidable deaths; I am completely mad on the current regime at the centre. But for every death - in reality a MURDER - in Delhi, you have equal blood on your hands. You were sitting and spending 150cr advertising yourself just between Jan to March this year while the cases increased. You did nothing for the last one year when Delhi needed at least 20,000 extra ICU beds if not more. And each bed obviously means extra oxygen facility. You have no shame to say that PM CARES fund didn’t come. Didn’t you have calculations? You are from IIT. Didn’t you know that making a few oxygen plants cost nothing compared to your state budget and so called landmark health budget? And you are FOOLING EVEN TODAY by saying lies like tomorrow even if there are 30k cases per day Delhi is now going to be equipped. You are a congenital liar. In case your IIT brain can’t calculate properly, let me help you. For every reported case in Delhi, ...
No PM after being elected should ever again be allowed to abdicate his responsibilities and go missing during every crisis. To strengthen democracy in INDIA, the entire MEDIA should come together and demand a LAW which makes it mandatory forever for any PM of INDIA to interact with the media once every fortnight at least for 60 min, & take a minimum of 15 questions from different journalists - 5 each from leading print media, electronic media & online media - with top 20 media houses from each field getting minimum of one chance by rotation to ask questions every two months. This will permanently end the godi media fraud. We can never ever again let a leader of India be unanswerable to it’s people - who are represented by the media - or develop a cosy relationship with a few media houses and keep the people of the INDIA in dark.
