Run!!! The merchants of death are angry!

Doctors are angry! Why? Aamir Khan has targeted them in two of his first four shows! And why not? After all, the show is called Satyamev Jayate! And the first and most important responsibility of a civilized society towards its citizens is that of giving them a good healthcare system (followed by education, employment and judiciary, in order to make a good democracy), that too in a country like India where an estimated 17% of the population die before the age of 40. The reality however is shockingly quite worse. The reality is that in this country, medicines for treatment of cancer patients – in one of the cases, 550,000 Morphine and 5,200,000 Morcontin tablets sent by the World Health Organization – that were supposed to be distributed free at all the hospitals in India, were dumped in the stores of hospitals beyond their expiry dates. These were costly medicines and Morphine is typically meant to relieve patients from intensive pain. It basically meant that in this particular case, patients who could not afford to buy such costly medicines from the market must have suffered immense pain with some of them dying too without proper treatment. WHO, of course, demanded an explanation. But what is more important for the masses is that the medical mafia keeps doing such acts to enhance the profits of pharmaceutical establishments.

I can easily cite scores of such examples from reports on miserable conditions existing in hospitals all over India. Although examples of the opposite nature are becoming rarer by the day, there are sparkling exceptions; and it gives me immense pleasure to write about one such example – the Shramjibi Hospital in Belur, West Bengal. When they admit a patient, they never ask him/her to deposit any money. Patients are almost always surprised to receive a very low bill (almost always one-fifth of the amount charged in other hospitals) when the treatment is over. For example, a coronary bypass surgery for heart costs Rs.25,000 at the hospital, inclusive of pre-and post-treatment charges. In the unfortunate case of the patient expiring during treatment, the management of this hospital never presents any bill to the relatives of the patient. Elsewhere, a bypass surgery may cost upwards of Rs.100,000 to Rs.350,000. Honestly speaking, since the surgery in a hospital and other services are not burdened with any transport and distribution costs, charges to be paid by patients for such surgeries should not exceed 100% of basic costs. But charges these days on operations are unfortunately 500% to 1000% of basic costs, and patients also can easily be blackmailed because of the prevailing threat of death. I am aware and proud of Shramjibi Hospital. Yet, on the other hand, services rendered by many private doctors and by private/public hospitals are of such miserable standards that one can even label them with the choicest of invectives; one reason I get the impression that these places are infested with ‘merchants of death’.

Well said sir.........the most important responsibility of our civilized society towards citizens is giving them a good healthcare system......many doctors today have forgotten their primary duty.

It was really very sad to see through the show how poor people have to suffer due to the dirty policies.

Great to see that hospitals such as the Shramjibi Hospital in Bengal still exist in today's world.....people in India really need many more such hospitals.
The MCI and the govt of India must get their act together and do something because it is them who can change the deteriorating medical & health system in the country.

The Indian medical association must investigate all such matters and take the required action........but as far as I know, they don't need any investigation as they must be aware of all such practices!!!!!!!

The IMA along with our govt. must bring the necessary changes in the medical & health system!

Prescribing the generic name of medicines is a great idea and it can remove half the financial burden of many people belonging to the middle class.

It is a great show indeed but its not right to target all the doctors and people associated with the IMA.....there are many who always do their bit to serve the mankind..its just that such people hardly come out in the public and keep doing their job!
Wow, it's shocking to read this. I knew that a lot of hospitals weren't that 'clean' or didn't meet the standards patients really need. But I didn't know that people intentionally 'invest in death and suffering'. speaking of ruthless capitalism.....

Written without research. You need a deeper insight into Indian Health System to understand it.
Know what you write about: morphine is a narcotic banned & regulated in many states in India.Did you mean to say WHO morphines expired because doctors were prescribing morphine from market? You cannot just jot down morphine tablets & you have to keep a record of each tab you give to your patient. The drugs expired in stores because of administrative negligence. Stop blaming doctors!
Generic Drugs:generic drugs are identical or within an acceptable bioequivalent range to the brand-name counterpart with respect to pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties. Here "brand name " means the Original patented brand name sold by the company which spent all the time & money to develop the drug molecule. For ex Xalatan is the brand name for Latanoprost molecule developed and marketed by pfizer. So after patents ahve expired other companies can also produce a similar drug molecule..naturally at a lower cost.So Cipla makes Latim, FDC Loprost and so on..and theses all are generic drug. So if a doctor writes Latim: you say he gets cuts from Cipla..if he writes Loprost: you say he gets cuts form FDC. So you wan't him to write by salt name...like latanoprost .005% drops.Isn't it so? i e write by the salt name. So you wan't a doctor to write salt names of a drug & not brand names of generic drugs..leaving the choice of the company to the chemist..he might give you Latim(Cipla) or Loprost(FDC) or anything he pleases which suits him.

Low cost surgeries were available in government hospitals. How much % GDP our govenrnment spends on Health? Below 2% ! that includes familywelfare & preventive medicine. And what they do to their skilled surgeons: recall Dr Venugopalan vs Ramadoss.

So thinktanks should think and write when they write.
I think marketing is also a show of power! The power that Aamir Khan is begining to accumulate is surely intimidating the power that doctor's have held through history.

HATS OFF TO SHAH RUKH KHAN FOR STANDING HIS GROUND! IT’S NOW TIME TO END THIS HOOLIGANISM ONCE AND FOR ALL AND MAKE MUMBAI A UNION TERRITORY!

SRK is great! Not just because he is such a star, but because he genuinely is the most amazing person and has such a logical and sound brain. And now the entire nation idolizes this man all the more because he has become a symbol of sheer courage as well! And I think all it required was someone like him to stand up coolly and say, “This is not right, I’ve done nothing wrong and I won’t apologise.” When he was saying this, one could almost see the schoolboy rebel in him – not ready to cow down to an illogical man trying to act as the school headmaster. I am writing this editorial immediately after coming back from a show on NDTV 24x7, which was on the topic, “Is Sena the real power in Mumbai?” I was one of the speakers. It was sad to see Uddhav Thackeray, who was another speaker in that show, sticking to a stance that cannot be defended by any sense of logic. When questioned on the show by the NDTV anchor on his tendentious comments against SRK, Uddhav’s reply was that one should ask th

It’s important for Anna to become more flexible and respectful towards the democratic process, to give a bigger thrust to his movement

I was too young then to really remember it all; but I have heard from many people that the mass protests generated by the arrest of Anna Hazare are similar to the uprising called Total Revolution led by the late Jaiprakash Narayan in the early 1970s. In fact, it was the Total Revolution and the chaos that followed – and a historic blunder by Indira Gandhi – that led to the imposition of the Emergency in India in 1975. Many people are comparing today’s situation to the Emergency days. The people of India are so fed up and so disgusted with corruption and our rotten and corrupt system that the wave of protests we see is hardly surprising. I have often publicly called India not a democracy but a demonocracy where crooked politicians and their criminal cohorts are openly plundering the nation; well aware that a dysfunctional judicial system will allow them to get away. In almost all cases, they have actually got away and have hence acquired the arrogance and swagger of pirates who know

Don’t see “Slumdog Millionaire”. It sucks!

A phony poseur that has been made only to mock India for the viewing pleasure of the First World!! The emperor’s new clothes! That’s “Slumdog Millionaire” for you… Five minutes into this celebrated patchwork of illogical clichés and you are struck by the jarring dialogues. The cumbersome delivery in a language which doesn’t come naturally to most of the actors sounds like someone scratching on walls with one’s finger nails; it ruins the possibility of a connection… Had this film been made by an Indian director, it would’ve been trashed as a rotting old hat, which literally stands out only because of its stench, but since the man making it happens to be from the West, we’re all left celebrating the emperor’s new clothes. The film borrows an undoubtedly interesting narrative style – from films like “City of God” – but then uses it to weave in a collection of clichés from the Third World’s underbelly for the viewing pleasure of a First World audience. The real slumdog in the movie is not
